NACE Experience 2011 in Reno!

This was my first NACE Experience, and let me tell you people, I'm hooked! If you missed this year, I'm told it was in the top ten best Experiences ever. Reno, and the surrounding area, is really cool. It's completely different than the East Coast, and you can tell it's right at the heart of the Gold Rush era. You feel like you're in the wild west with some of the towns we visited (especially Virginia City).

The Silver Legacy Hotel & Casino took great care of us! Between the clean and modern rooms, fantastic (and ABUNDANT) food every day, and the fact that I walked out of there $490 richer, they can be sure I'll be staying there every time I visit Reno. Major props to NACE Reno and NACE National for a fantastic job pulling off this years Experience, with nearly 1000 people in attendance!

This years Ask Me About DC event was a huge hit! I had a great time DJ'ing for all of the vendors there, as well as the Congressional staff, and even caught a few people dancing to the Cha Cha Slide at their booths.

I saw a ton of vendors I already knew. like Nicole Restivo at Taberna Del Alabardero, Rachel Krieger at Smith & Wollensky, both of which provided some amazing samples from their restaurant. Special thanks to Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and the DC Chamber of Commerce to make Ask Me About DC more spectacular each year. The Westin Grand put on a spectacular show with top notch entertainment, fabulous decor, and an awesome display of food. The chocolate room was a big hit, and the swing dancers from the band Swingin' On A Star got the crowd moving. In the Grand Ballroom, Jessica Lynn & her band, Invitation, took requests and got standing ovations.

Our band Kaleidoscope rocked the Washington Capitals Casino night, and helped raise $285,000 for the Capital Area Food Bank and other great causes at their Gala on Jan 24th at the Hilton Mark Center in Alexandria.

Senior Catering Director Heidi Coblentz and her team put out a sensational carving station, sliders, sushi, tapas bar, and top shelf spirits. Popular auction items were a ping pong tournament with Mike Green and other players, and a hockey clinic with Alex Ovechkin.

Traveling South, I was met by Cheryl Cox at Comus Inn, who was preparing for 3 Weddings last weekend. The Inn's charm and romantic setting are big hits among Brides, and the view...absolutely stunning. I was also treated to lunch, and the crab cake BLT was like no other sandwich I've ever had!

A beautiful tent was being up for this weeks festivities and Cheryl was on top of all the events for the elegant weekend ahead! I can't wait go back for dinner and also encourage all of you planners to visit this gem on Sugarloaf Mountain.

Musket Ridge Golf Club

When the going gets tough, it's time for a roadtrip! Last week, I went to visit Bonnie Swanson at Musket Ridge Golf Club in Myersville. This gem overlooks the beautiful Sugarloaf Mountains. Golfing here has always been top notch, but the new ballroom is immaculate, and outdoor Weddings with the golf course/mountain view are breathtaking. Bonnie will also throw in a few rounds of golf for the Groom and a few buddies.

The 45 minute scenic drive was well worth it. Bonnie made me feel part of the Musket Ridge family as Civil War sites and other interesting pieces of history were pointed out. I suggest that all party planners make a site visit and check out this fabulous event space and golf course!

Ceresville Mansion

On the road again to Ceresville Mansion in Frederick MD, which is celebrating its 20th Anniversary. I was entertained by Kathaleen, Stacey, Allison, Jenni, and Stephanie who took the time to give me a historical tour of the mansion and grounds dating back 100 years.

This fabulous venue entertains 175 events per year, and features a beautiful site for ceremonies that reminds me of the Parthenon in Athens with a pool in front. They also host conferences, picnics, and seminars. On the road back to the office as the heavens opened up, as it does every day in May and June. - Ray

Strong Mansion

When the going gets tough, the tough hit the road. I traveled to see Strong Mansion for myself last week, and was greeted by the events coordinator Christie Kefauver, who took me on a tour and gave me a history lesson of the civil war era mansion. Located in the middle of the Sugarloaf Mountains, the scenary is spectacular, and the permanent outside facilities downplay any weather issues. There are many options to use for ceremonies, and the grounds with its flowers, ponds, and trees make Strong Mansion a breathtaking Wedding venue. This year alone there will be over 45 happy Brides who have their Ceremony/Reception here! - Ray

On May 30th, I had a fabulous dining experience at Bourbon Steak in the beautiful, newly renovated Four Seaons Hotel in Washington, DC. Our server, Jennifer, was a delight as she spoiled us with our french fries as we were sitting down. Our steaks were superb and we were able to meet executive chef David Varley, who graciously came over to talk to our table.

After dessert, a few signature drinks and coffee. I received a call from my Daughter, Robin, that her boyfriend Phil had just proposed, so they met us at the bar for more drinks. The cost of the evening at Bourbon Steak was a flicker compared to what's coming up in the Wedding plans.

I highly recommend Bourbon Steak for a special occasion or just treat yourself if you are happy! - Ray

In a driving monsoon, I rediscovered the Pooks Hill Marriott Bethesda on June 11th, celebrating 30 years. I was greeted by Stephen and David Marriott, along with such VIP's as Gary Hechler, Katrina Sparico, Vivan Tsakeris, and David Zebrowski. I was treated to a great nostalgic movie, depicting 30 years of restaurants, renovations, and celebrations. Food and Drinks consisted of mini-mighty mo's, root beer floats, and cupcakes. I think they want me to join a second gym.

There was also a cooking demonstration with recipes handed out to all the guests from Star Catering. Last night I met Christine Godsey, the newest member of one of the DC area's premiere Wedding Planning companies, Engaging Affairs.

Christine Godsey began her event management career 5+ years ago while working at The Staubach Company, a corporate real estate consulting firm. There, she planned a variety of events such as holiday parities, incentive outings, networking events and offsite meetings. While at The Staubach Company, she realized her true passion in life...planning events. Christine attended and completed George Washington University’s Event Management Certificate Program. While studying at George Washington, her weekends and evenings were spent learning from and working alongside some of DC's finest event planners, assisting the coordination of weddings and corporate events to destination management.

Since then, Christine has left the corporate world to work in events full time. Recently joining Engaging Affairs, Christine has been busy planning events and wedding of all sizes and budgets. Her biggest reward is a flawless event where everyone is having a great time. Christine has been educated in international protocol and etiquette by The International Society of Protocol & Etiquette Professionals.

I had a wonderful experience at a jewel of a destination last Thursday, Herrington on the Bay in Friendship, MD. Innkeeper Anna Willman showed us a great time with a tour of the beach area for Wedding Ceremonies, the pavilion for receptions, and the remodeled rooms for Wedding guests and vacationers.

The lunch of petite crab cakes, Herrington salad, lime rockfish w/peach salsa, and a raspberry cheesecake lollipop was awesome. DJ Debbie Bulles and I participated in the Stonewall Golf Club bridal show on Sunday April 26, 2009. The exquisitely designed clubhouse and elegantly adorned Magnolia Room offered grand panoramic views of Lake Manassas, water fountains and golf courses. There was a classical string quartet playing as guests strolled from vendor table to vendor table, inquiring about Bialek's Music DJ's, bands and everything else from photographers to cake designers. There were also live models showing off designer wedding dresses.

It was a beautiful sunny day, complimentary drinks and horderves were served, helping put everybody in a great mood. Big kudos to Jeanna Hilton, the Director of Sales at Stonewall GC!

Thoroughly enjoyed the Accapella concert at Jammin Java last night. The three groups, Kismet (above), Skyline, and Cartoon Johnny (below) were superb. Dan's friend Judy sung her heart out (last Lady on the right)! This was the first time we'd seen Kismet and they didn't disappoint.

Dan and I are already big fans of Cartoon Johnny and their token female vocalist, Darcy Ramano. We've booked them a few times already for cocktail receptions. Finally, we got to see her Daughter for the first time. CUTEST...KID....EVER.
